My “Braveheart” sculpture is of a Sioux Indian from the Plains of South Dakota. He is wearing a roach headdress and his earrings and necklace are seashells. I wanted his attitude to be “Resolute and Determined” and the true meaning of a “Brave.” He foresees an event relating to a challenge and danger but he will meet that challenge with courage and bravery.
Since their hair was directly related to their soul, the people of the Plains treated and groomed it with special care, and unique ornaments, most of which were medicine items, were worn on the head. Added to these to enhance one’s appearance was an imposing assortment of necklaces, earrings, and arm bands. Each headdress followed a tribal pattern or else was the result of a vision, and so the wearing of it heightened the spiritual atmosphere in which the warrior walked.
Most Plains Indians made some use of the type of headdress called the roach, and many warriors wore it for ceremonial dance occasions. The roach was made of combinations of deer tail hair, moose hair, porcupine hair, and or horsehair.
For the Plains tribes, materials that were extremely rare or difficult to obtain, such as seashells and bear claws were especially valuable. Seashells were obtained in trade with coastal tribes and the Indians thought of them as a “Sun Power Symbol”.
